rodneyscat: (maggie loves reading)
Last week I've been quite busy because on moments I wasn't working at the bookstore in Utrecht, I was filling in at the bookstore in Nieuwegein. This week will be the same. It's nice seeing my former colleagues again, but I'm glad this is only temporarily because I'd been looking forward to some time for myself with the kids back at school and all. Well, at least I have Sunday's off.

On top of me not having much on-line time as it was, internet went down a couple of times this week. In spite of that I managed to get SGA 5x7, so I watched that last night. Some spoilery remarks about this episode and an upcoming one behind this cut. )

I've also watched the first episode of Farscape and it took me all of 2 minutes to fall hopelessly in love with John Crichton; I finally added Ben Browder to my interests.

Oh, and I'm using my tram and bus traveling time to read. A couple of Dutch writers (Siska Mulder and Joost Heyink), Lynn Flewelling's ([livejournal.com profile] otterdance) Nightrunner series, and I've been rereading some of my favorite Rodney/John adolescent fics. Rawr!!

rodneyscat: (rodney and john boys and their toys)
These are the fics I've been re-reading and enjoying this week. All of them have a young Rodney and/or John in it. Because I'm pervy like that.

'The thing with toolbelts' by [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore (rodney/OMC, R)
The year Rodney turns 16 something happens to make him develop a thing for toolbelts. The warning 'Rodney is rather young' was in fact a recommendation for me *shifty eyes*, so yeah... I loved this, because I have such a thing for adolescents taking their first steps into exploring sexuality, when it's done in such a happy way as here. I love the idea that Rodney's first experience was a good one, with a guy who knew what he was doing. I like to imagine Rodney thinking back on it and getting all excited (and a little smug)

'Invite first' by [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore (John/OMC, John/Rodney, NC-17)
This starts with John's first steps into exploring sex. It's a little scary and exciting and secretive, but not traumatising on the one hand, nor completely perfect on the other.
It takes getting together with Rodney to find out how much more it can be, to open up to someone you trust.

'Not exactly rocket science' by [livejournal.com profile] apple_pi (AU, John/Rodney, NC-17)
John is editor for a university newspaper and Rodney has to hand in an article before the deadline to replace the one he wrote on the Riemann hypothesis and the story about Yang-Mills existence and the mass gap. It should be something that interests him and the average student alike. So he starts an anonymous gay sex advice column 'Not exactly rocket science' which turns out to be a big hit.
It also turns out to be something that gets John and Rodney talking about Rodney's virginity problem. By the end of the story this problem is thoroughly solved.

'Second time' by [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse (John/Rodney, R)
Rodney is 15 and John is 16 when they find themselves together in an upstairs room at a party. It's there that they set their first steps into exploring sex with another guy. It's adorable with the good kind of awkward and exciting and hot and absolutely brilliant even though they never see each other again after. Keep the title of the fic in mind though :D

'Under the sea' (4,500 words, AU, John/Rodney, R)
19 year old Rodney is a geeky kid who would rather spend his weekend playing with the shiny supercomputer at the university than party. When he's literally shoved out of the building, he sulks around at a frat party and proceeds to get very drunk with a guy dressed as a princess with a tiara. The next day he ends up tutoring a whole bunch of guys in math, just so he can spend more time with the guy who's of course John.
It takes a while for Rodney to figure out John is actually a damn clever guy, and John figures out a way to spend time with the computer and have some private partying.

'do.' by [livejournal.com profile] velocitygrass (3,400 words, AU, John/Rodney, NC-17)
In this story John is a teacher and an adult, and Rodney is a 17 year old student in his class. Rodney is smart and obnoxious and flirts relentlessly with John, who has a very hard time not giving in.
A very passionate story that made my heart ache for Rodney when it becomes clear that it can't be and for John who had to be the responsible one.
And I can't tell you how happy I was with the fourteen months after Rodney's graduation bit at the end of the fic.

'The happiest place on earth' by [livejournal.com profile] devildoll (6,500 words, AU, John/Rodney, PG-13)
If I had to pick a favorite 'teenagers in love' fic, I think I'd go for this one. John and Rodney meet at a hotel where they're on holiday with their families.
I love the immediate click and how Rodney relishes his slowly growing crush on John. How it doesn't occur to him that he could actually do something about it or that John might feel the same way and is trying to get that across in his own awkward way. When it finally does happen there is no stopping them going at it like the proverbial horny teenagers they are. It's all so completely sweet and it makes me nostalgic in a good way.

'Lock the door' by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock (AU, John/Rodney, NC-17)
Rodney is a teacher who finds himself hopelessly attracted to John, an extraordinarily smart and good-looking student in his class. It's easy to sympathize with Rodney's frustration and it's fun to see the people around him react (all 'guest-roles' from fellow SGA characters) until the story seems to take an alarming turn. I don't want to spoil anything, but know that you won't be disappointed if you read until the end.
I love this story specifically for its twists and the combination of humor, seriousness and lust.

'Supply and demand' by [livejournal.com profile] yin_again
(AU, John/Rodney, R)
Rodney's father is paying John to be Rodney's friend. Rodney is not inclined to play along and John makes clear that 'friend' does not equal 'servant'. In short, they don't really have a good start. It gets better of course when it turns out that spending time together isn't actually all that bad, and then it gets way better. Especially when it turns out they've got something in common.
Funny, sweet and hot.

'17.5: a love story' by [livejournal.com profile] helenish (22,900 words, John/Rodney, R)
Some alien device turns Rodney into a 17 year young guy who is just as clever but more pleasant and attractive than the regular cranky, obnoxious and 40 year old version. John has a hard time dealing with how everyone is reacting to Rodney, how Rodney is reacting to him and how he himself is reacting to this all.
