I just came home from the dentist for a very thorough scaling of my teeth. And an equally (and justified I'm afraid) thorough lecture on the benefits of not limiting cleaning to just brushing.

Ow.

Remind me to floss?

Get a flossing tool. I probably floss more than I ever have in my life now that I use this item to help me floss. It used to be that flossing:
1. hurt my fingers
2. gagged me

Now I don't cut my circulation in my fingers off with my handy dandy little tool. Looks like a toothbrush handle, just minus the brush part. then this little floss thingie fits onto it and I can jab it around my mouth all I want. Works like a charm. Ask your dentist!

Yeah, I've got one of those, and flossing with just the use of my fingers doesn't even bother me that much, plus toothpicks do the trick very nicely too, I just mostly get sloppy after a while... Every few years I get this reminder that it's not a matter of getting my gums in shape and then 'lie back' so to speak, it's something we're stuck with for life. I used to be very good for quite some time! And then I just forget, or rather, as my mother-in-law, wise woman that she is, always says: forgetting is not taking the trouble of reminding yourself.

You can bet I'll be good again for quite some time, and she let me make an appointment for next month, to check if I've improved. She's a stern woman my dentist is! Exactly what I need.

I suspect everybody recognizes the situation to some extend.

I just had a dentist's appointment last week too. Luckily, it doesn't sound as bad as yours was! So much of it is genetic, I'm convinced. There are peope who breeze through without every flossing and people who never get plaque no matter how poorly they brush. And then there are those who are born to suffer. Nevertheless:

DON'T FORGET TO FLOSS!

I have to say that since I started using floss, I've never needed anything doing at the dentist - touch wood (heh!). It works.

Ouch.

That reminds me, I am long overdue for a checkup in the first place...

I know! It's worked for me brilliantly, back before I got sloppy...

Why did I get sloppy?!?

Anyway, I'm starting anew with clean teeth (and achy gums) and am determined to keep up with the program!

Ok, that was weird...

I replied, but when I checked the reply was gone, so I checked again, still no reply, so I replied again, and then of course there were two...

Flossing helps for me! It's not even that much trouble, and it pays off, because my teeth and gums stay in perfect condition when I floss faithfully.

It's just so easy to forget about the benefits when you just want to go to bed, and stand there cleaning your face, brushing your teeth and then think 'ah well, floss...' and skip that part *sighs guiltily*

I just had my dental cleaning a couple of weeks ago, while it wasn't bad it's not something I particularly enjoy either.

Although having really clean teeth does feel rather good.........

I actually keep floss in my desk at work and am not above using it while I'm sitting and working. Well, OK...I do usually try to duck a bit behind the cube wall. After all, no need to advertise my dental hygine to the entire office, is there?

That's the tip my dentist gave me: don't just keep floss and toothpicks in the bathroom, but everywhere around the house, so you can pick and floss idly while watching tv, or waiting for the coffee to be ready, or while reading slash. Although she didn't specify the latter...
