In 1928, at the Giza plateau in Egypt, an archaeologist found a big circle made of an unknown material, with a fossil buried underneath.

His daughter Catherine Langford, a girl still, picked up a pendant.

70 years later the girl, now turned an elderly lady, goes to look up a young archaeologist Daniel Jackson…

… who has some controversial ideas about Egyptian pyramides…

… to the point that he’s lecturing in front of empty rooms.

In the meantime the military visit a depressed colonel Jack O’Neil (still with one ‘l’)

…with a broken marriage…

… consumed with grief and guild over the death of his son (called Tyler instead of Charlie), who shot himself accidentally with Jack’s service gun.

Daniel Jackson arrives at the mountain after Catherine invited him to decipher some ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

We find out that Daniel has allergies.

He immediately starts correcting other people’s translations, his coat still on.

Jack O’Neil arrives, with an alarming crew-cut, and immediately assumes command.

While Catherine fights this, and Jack stands his ground, Daniel goes on translating.

We see him juggling paperwork and coffee on his way to a meeting…

…where he presents his finding…

… and as a result gets introduced to…

… the stargate…

In the control-room he figures out the last missing piece.

So now they can complete the sequence.

And let the stargate form a stable wormhole to some point in the universe.

They let a probe (what will later be called a malp) do a test drive-through, to check if the other side is suitable and safe for humans.

And when they consider the test a success, they form a team to make the first journal through the stargate. Daniel Jackson is part of the team as he says he will be able to figure out how to get back once they arrive on the other side. Catherine gives him her pendant for luck.

Once the team is ready to go, Jack steps through first, with grim determination.

And Daniel goes last, with a look full of wonder and amazement.

The trip takes quite a while and makes some weird noises.

Once on the other side people are disoriented and freezing.

They check out the surroundings.

And outside find that they’ve arrived inside a big pyramid and the planet has three moons.

Some equipment is set out to do some readings.

And Daniel discovers that he needs more information to be able to figure out how to get back.

This does not go over well with some of the soldiers, so Jack has to step in to prevent them from beating the shit out of Daniel.

While Daniel sets out to look for clues, and the men go to set up camp for the time being, Jack goes inside to set up some device at the foot of the stargate.

Daniel finds an interesting sign of life…

…and gets quite carried away by it.

Jack and two others run after him because they still need a linguistic archaeologist to get them out of here dammit.

Daniel shakes himself loose of the beast and the foursome finds a kind of encampment.

Which looks to be a mining operation.

They get noticed in return by a boy whose name will turn out to be Skaara.

The pendant Daniel is wearing makes quite an impression.

And while the people are busy bowing and kneeling, one of the soldiers checks whatever it is they are mining, and it turns out to be the same kind of material the stargate is made of.

Skaara has gone to fetch his dad Kasuf, who is a chief of some sort. Daniel gets shoved forward to practice his linguistic skills because weirdly enough these people don’t speak English.

Kasuf also has a daughter.

After exchanging drinks, food and smiles, working day appears to be over anyway and the people invite them to come with them to their city.

Where it becomes clear why they find Daniel’s pendant so interesting.

They react very shocked when Daniel tries to draw something for them; apparently this is forbidden.

For some reason Daniel is offered the chiefs daughter, and while the whole tribe thinks they’re having sex behind the curtains, Daniel in fact declines the offer, introduces himself and tries to make conversation.

She tells him her name is Sha’uri.

And after some hesitation she makes clear she’s seen the kind of sign Daniel is looking for, and is prepared to show him where this is.

Jack is bonding with Skaara, who is fascinated with Jack.

Jack is in fact bonding with a whole bunch of young men.

Sha’uri has taken Daniel to some hidden, secret place. They figure out how to talk to each other and what the drawings on the walls mean. It turns out Ra is a parasitical alien being who has taken a human body as a host to gain eternal life and uses humans as his slaves.

When the young tribal men have led Jack and the other men to Daniel, they find the stone with the symbols they need. The last symbol is missing though, so they still won’t be able to get home.

The four head back to the base-camp, to find a huge spaceship has landed over the pyramid.

Inside they get attacked by alien looking men. All but Jack and Daniel are captured…

…as witnessed by the tribal boys, who have secretly followed them.

Jack finds out the device he’d set up is missing.
