I went to see three movies in four days.
Last Thursday I saw 'Collateral' with my colleagues as a special staff viewing we get treated to every once in a while.
I really liked it. There's a lot of action, but also enough room for good dialogue, some people you get to know enough to like and some excellent scenes. I especially loved the scene at the start of the taxidriver and his lady client, and the scene in the jazz club where they talk about Miles Davis (especially the way the taxidriver gets so drawn in, that he almost forgets about the situation he's in).
Friday evening Mr. D_E and I went to see 'The Bourne Supremacy'. (It was the first time ever that we went out and left the children without someone to watch over them.)
Uhm, well, talk about unrealistic... I mean, not everything has to be realistic, but the underwater scene was so ridiculous it wasn't scary anymore and we had quite some giggles over Bourne, who is so quick in everything and then has to rewind and listen three times to a little bit of completely clear conversation on a tape. Not to mention the Mary Poppins bag (from which a seemingly endless stream of automatic weapons, clothes and license plates can be drawn) he's carrying around!
Anyway, the actors did the best job they could do under the circumstances, there's a lot of action (we got more than a little seasick from the hectic camera movements though; geez louise, aren't we supposed to see something every once in a while?!) and Karl Urban looks absolutely edible (but doesn't sound like himself. I think it's his own voice, but I wouldn't be surprised when he's dubbed by someone else.)
And then. Today. I saw 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind'. Those who haven't seen it yet: go! See it in a theatre preferably, but if it's not showing anymore, rent it, buy it, but go see it! I loved it to bits.
Yeah, I already was a Jim Carrey fan. Especially in movies where acting is required, and he's beautiful in this. I may be in love (I don't know the first thing about his private life, maybe he kicks dogs and has remarried 10 times; don't know, don't care, I love him as an actor).
Oooooooooh Kate Winslet!!!! *loves all over her* She's one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen, an excellent actress and from what little I've seen and read of her in interviews she's a wonderful person.
It was of course Elijah who drew my attention to the movie in the first place, but I was very curious once I heard who did the script, who was going to direct and most of all, when I heard that Jim was going to play a serious role in it and Kate was going to be in it too! I've been waiting for this movie for months and months and it's just as great as I hoped and frankly expected it to be.
Elijah's Patrick is one creepy, fucked up freak. Elijah did a great job acting this, seeing as I wouldn't want to come near a person like Patrick. He doesn't even look beautiful or cute to me anymore. It's weird how I initially thought 'Oh look, sweet!' when he came into view the first time, looking into Joel's car, asking if he needed help. (I was already so into the story that my heart started somersaulting when I saw the street where I knew he'd appear; we've all seen him standing, freezing his ass and ears off on the sidewalk).
But later when he's talking to his colleague, he moves from sad, to pathetic, to oh god yuck freaky, real fast! It's not so much the underwear stealing, as the fact that he clearly doesn't see it's so wrong what he's doing. When Clementine is seeking comfort with him, I feel the urge to shout; 'get your filthy hands off her, you creep!'
I loved how the story is build. Normally I get lost when I try to follow a James Bond movie, but here the story was so clear to me: you just go with the flow, and everything falls into place at the end. Everything fits so beautifully! It's amazing.
By the way, isn't it just a big 'Chain of Fools' reunion?! Not just Elijah and Tom Wilkinson, but also David Cross!
Joel's despair when he doesn't want the procedure to continue is so heartbreaking! And at the end, Clementine and Joel listening to each other's tapes, omg omg I cried so many times during this movie! I even cried at moments that I think may have been meant comical, I don't know, I heard a lot of giggling around me. The wanking scene is funny in an embarrassing way of course, but when he goes back to his childhood and is bullied into smashing the dead bird...
That scene of Joel and Clementine under the quilt, when Clementine is talking about feeling ugly, oh that was so touching and erotic.
I feel weirder and weirder all the time... was that scene even meant to be erotic? Maybe I just think so because they both look so beautiful in that scene, they're so close and connected.
I feel like I could go on and on about this movie. It's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, crammed with scenes that make me smile, that move me, that make me wince and slap my hands over my mouth. I want to see it again, but not too soon. I want to let this sink in a bit more. I think I'm going to look at the caps
undone27 made, although she probably focused on Elijah (of course). That's ok, it's an excellent start.

Date: 2004-09-20 07:11 pm (UTC)Oh, and the kids did perfect! We left them with crisps and drinks and they'd already picked a movie they wanted to watch together (extended version of TTT). We'd taken along a mobile, so if in case of an emergency they could call us and we'd be home within a couple of minutes. When we got home the movie wasn't even finished yet because they'd taken a break to make drawings for us, still for our anniversary (this outing was our celebration) and they were a little disappointed that we'd come home so 'early' (it was 11.45 pm...) They want us to go every Friday. We feel once a month will be good enough for starters!
