Today I brought my oldest to the train because he's going to spend a couple of days with his cousin and best friend. They've been friends since they were 2 and 3 years old and whenever they're together they're pretty much attached at the hip and up to a lot of mischief but in such a way that you never can stay mad at them. Now they're old enough to travel on their own, they take every opportunity they've got to do so in order to be together. Very Merry and Pippin.

While I was in Utrecht, where the trainstation is, I went to buy tickets for [livejournal.com profile] gayadi and me, for the Dungen concert next week. It cost me 15 Euro. For two tickets... Cheapest. Concert. Ever.

And now for something completely different:

My (13 year old) daughter has been reading fanfiction for some time now (HP, LOTR and crossovers between those) and told me it's hard finding good fiction written in Dutch, so she'd like to try some English fanfiction. Specifically Buffy, because she can't find any Dutch fiction in that, and HP, because that's her major fandom. I'm afraid all the fics I can point her to have Harry and Draco fucking, which I doubt she'll like, and the only Buffy fic I've read is a Sentinel crossover which has Xander and Blair fucking. Erm... Anyone know of any good places to go looking, or even specific fics she could like?
(She's not averse to some romance, just no hard-core sex.)

Can't help you at all as the only Gen I read is LOTR and I don't know Buffy verse but the Jim/Blair crossover was sweet, wasn't it?

I suppose just sending her off to FictionAlley would be a bit overwhelming?

I have LOTS of Harry Potter stories that I've enjoyed. Some of the best are no longer on fanfiction.net, I'll try to get some links/address' for you. On Fanfiction there is:
-Resonance, by GreenGecko
-The Awakening Power by Sib-ff
-Because You're Mine by Ms Padfoot
-The Refiner's Fire by Abraxan
-Consequences of the Truth, by Seal1
-This Mean's War by Jeconais It's HYSTERICAL!
-This fiction is on a different site now, but it's one of the best I've ever read. archive.skyehawke.com/authors.php?no=781 A Year Like No Other. There is a bit of violence, but no sex.

Some of these have sequels too, which is always nice.

Then there are some of the other sites that are fun to poke around on.

Sink Into Your Eyes - Ginny/Harry archive. Can't vouch for no sex.
http://www.hgnetwork.co.uk/siye/index.php

PhoenixSong.net -Harry/Ginny and general HP Fanfiction http://www.phoenixsong.net/index.php

Harry/Ginny (again!) Site. This is a specific author, and she wrote a fantastic series. The first is Carpe Diem: http://www.harryandginny.co.uk/

Lord and Lady Snape _ Severus Snape/Hermione Granger. http://whysnape.tripod.com/ficromance.htm

The Sugar Quill Many pairings of many different ratings: http://www.sugarquill.net/

Will that help somewhat? Let me know if I can help any more.

Hm, I don't have any pointers for Buffy, but for HP
I know the place for her: Sugarquill (http://www.sugarquill.net/)

Lots of sweet Harry/Ginny romance!

And of course there's fanfiction (http://www.fanfiction.net/),
a mixed bag of stuff, but, come to think of it, she might find loads of Buffy
there. There's no hard-core sex there, but since authors from any age group
are welcome, the quality of writing varies- to say the least.

Cheers to your daughter for wanting to explore the fanfic world,
and many more cheers to you for wanting to lead her gently into
said world!!

You're a wonderful Mum, darling Dutche!

:-)

Have you tried Fictionalley (http://www.fictionalley.org/)? It's a very large site with lots of different fics. They have a genre (http://www.fictionalley.org/genres/) page, where you can click on 'general,' or 'romance,' etc. You can also search fics by character or pairing. Here (http://forums.fictionalley.org/fics/search.php) is a search engine. I hope you'll find something good!

You know, my daughter is now well into watching the last season of Buffy, and the series itself is an excellent introduction into slash, what with Tara/Willow, and there's a gay guy whose name I haven't caught and in the latest episode we've watched together Xander is all frustrated because yet another date of his turned out to be a female demon and he turns to Willow asking her how to be homosexual, (Willow's 'wtf?!?' face is priceless) to which Buffy says it wouldn't make a difference because he'd then end up dating male demons.

Oh, and if you could point out gen lotr that would be great too!

I'll give her the link, because it looks like the kind of site she'd like. The thing is, her English is good enough to read a story, but she doesn't read it as easily as Dutch of course, so the trick of scanning a fic quickly to see if you'd like it, doesn't work as well. But it's good to have places to start out!

Woo! I wouldn't have guessed there's so much Harry/Ginny fic out there! And those fics you've pointed out on Fanfiction.net are easy to find, so I think she'll have plenty of fics to start out with here. That Sugarquill site looks nice too. Thanks!

Fanfiction.net is rather massive if you don't have anything to start with, [livejournal.com profile] noipeh has pointed out some specific fics, so that's helpful. It's good to see Sugarquill pointed out by more people, because that's usually a good sign.

She's already deeply into the fanfic world, but so far only on Dutch sites. It's easier searching in her own language of course, she can spot what's for her and what isn't her taste easier than in English. I know she's read a bit of romance, and she's come across slash, but she didn't see the point of that; for example she can see Sam/Frodo, but Harry/Draco is ridiculous in her eyes (Harry/Hermione is also ridiculous in her eyes by the way). She's very enthusiastic about some James/Lily she's read and her favorite pairing is Tonks/Lupin. She's canon like that ;)

From what I've seen from you guys, Fictionalley and Sugarquill are the sites for her. I wouldn't have found those sites myself (well, maybe eventually...) and although I don't mind her coming across slash or even reading it if she feels she's ready for it, I didn't want her wading kneedeep through NC-17 fics. It's not what she's interested in yet anyway. She wouldn't have made it to the 7th season of Buffy if sex had squicked her mightily though ;)

*LOL* That's the understatement of the year! :P Season 6 is not called 'The Sex Season' for nothing. ;D

There are lots of fics out there where Tonks-Lupin are a secondary pairing. Unfortunately, some of my favorites I really wouldn't recommend for a 13 year old (the age of my eldest) because of the sex content. She's just not there yet. If you want some of those recommendations, whether for your daughter or for you, let me know!

When I showed her the site, and tried to explain to her how to search, she noticed quicker that me that she could also switch to different languages (she found a Dutch Tonks/Lupin in no time) and when I said I didn't know yet what 'T' in the ratings stood for, she said 'oh, probably 'Teens', don't you think?'. She's printed the first chapter of a very long, completed series, to try it out, and it looks like her kind of story: decently written, focussed on adventure and drama, with a little romance on the side.

I never really tried finding anything on Fanfiction.net! Maybe I should do that. At the moment I'm still too busy reading from 852 Prospect though. Ah, so many fics, so little time...

Recs

Hi, thanks for the opportunity to pay you back on the Recs front.

If your 13 yr old has seen up to Season 5, I'd suggest these two by Yahtzee (http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/insect/).

Being Lois Lane/ pg-13, post season 2
http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/insect/insectfic/LoisLane.htm

and Phoenix Burning/ r, not much in the sex vein though, post S5
http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/insect/insectfic/PhoenixIndex.htm
this is long, but worth it. Obviously you might give them a skim before you let her read them...which I defintely suggest! :)

Oooh lovely!! Buffy recs; I didn't have those yet, so these are very welcome. I'll check them out and pass them on to my daughter. She'll be thrilled, because she's just finished watching the last season which always leaves you in a vacuum for a while.

It's also nice to know my recs have been useful to you; thanks for telling me :D
