I don't think you have. I watched with my husband and teenboy, had to explain a lot of the socio-political bits to him. He knew about the battle parts. It was interesting experience, especially when they got to the concentration camp.
Got to me more than other shows partly because I'd just found out that my great-grandmother lost her entire family, some of them to the Nazis, others to the Soviets. She eventually found a second cousin, but everyone else had died.
I didn't have to do any explaining, since it's all very much part of our history. Part of it takes place in The Netherlands, and there's one episode where Eindhoven is featured, which is the hometown of my father. My mom was born in 1944, but my dad and my husbands parents remember the war vividly and have talked about it much.
It's an impressive series, which makes it easy to imagine what it must have been like; the fear, the confusion, the bravery, the solidarity, the total waste of so many healthy, good young men. I mean, they were obviously fighting for a good cause, but there shouldn't be any cause for fighting. In that way it's always frustrating watching good war movies, because you see people with so much potential, working hard and putting their energy and talent and lives on the line for something so destructive.
